'Action needed' over silent calls

The government needs to take action over the issue of silent calls, according to one Member of Parliament.

Stockport MP Andrew Stunell has added his voice to the campaign highlighting the severity of the issue, saying they can be "a cause of great anxiety for many people".

He backed moves by communications regulator Ofcom and consumer champions Consumer Focus and Age Concern to challenge the practice of making automated marketing contact – the primary source of silent calls.

Mr Stunell stated: "The government need to take action. They must enforce Ofcom's regulations more strictly, to require call centres using automated systems to play an information message if a call is abandoned, to prevent the call from being silent.

"Where companies continue causing distress by making silent calls, I would strongly urge local people to report them to Ofcom so they can investigate and take enforcement action if necessary."

Earlier this year, Ofcom produced a guide for consumer receiving silent calls, explaining the complaints procedure.
