VoIP 'rising in popularity'

Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephony is becoming the most popular way for people to communicate with each other from the home and the workplace, one commentator has claimed.

Writing for IPTV Watch, Alan Harten says consumers are increasingly being drawn to screen sharing options and VoIP calls.

He explains that calls can be made much cheaper using VoIP than a traditional landline, making vocal communication more akin to sending an email.

According to Infonetics Research's VoIP and Unified Communications Services and Subscribers reports, published last month, the global VoIP market grew by 33 per cent to be worth an estimated £20 billion during 2008.

The VoIP report indicated that web-based telephony can not only reduce outgoings but also increase service levels, persuading more firms to upgrade their communications infrastructure.

Infonetics Research directing analyst Diane Myers said: "For the first three months of 2009, service providers experienced an average of 40 per cent to 50 per cent year-over-year growth, indicating the demand for outsourcing and managed solutions remains healthy."
