Heritage Nortel Portfolio

After many months of uncertainty during 2009, the acquisition of Nortel’s enterprise division by Avaya has enabled Nortel users to look to the future with confidence.

Where once a Nortel telephony or contact centre roadmap seemed like a pipe dream, under Avaya’s leadership an integrated roadmap has emerged that couples many key elements of Nortel’s portfolio with Avaya’s SIP-based Aura Architecture to offer a compelling path forward for Nortel customers.

Nortel Meridian and CS1000 Users

Perhaps not unsurprisingly, the recommendation from Avaya to both heritage Nortel and Avaya users is to ‘get current’ – upgrade to the latest releases of your respective platforms. These releases are the crossing points or evolution paths into a fully integrated SIP-based architecture.

The Communication Server 1000 (CS1000) Release 7.0 is now available, with a further release (7.5) in planning phase. The release adds hardware improvements to simplify the Meridian 1 to CS1000 migration process, improved web-based management and security, survivable SIP media gateways that support more branch locations.

Upgrading your Meridian 1 to CS1000 R7.0, or older releases of CS1000 to R7.0, is the easiest most cost-effective approach to migrating to unified communications (UC) and provides a simple evolutionary path to the Avaya AuraTM UC solution.

Nortel CC6.0 and Nortel Symposium users

Avaya has already introduced Avaya NES Contact Center Version 7.1 (which is the re-branded version of what would have been the Nortel Contact Centre 7.1).

Within 6 months of launching their integration roadmap in January 2010, Avaya has announced the Avaya Aura Contact Centre 6.0 – the next generation contact centre solution that integrates Avaya and Nortel CC 7.x assets within the same platform. It works on the CS1000 platform and is a software upgrade from Nortel CC6.0 or Nortel CC 7.x

The few remaining Nortel Symposium users should consider plans to migrate to newer releases. The introduction of the Nortel Contact Center x.x version was a generational change in contact centre capability (from call centre to multi-channel contact centre) and the latest Avaya Aura Contact Center 6.0 solution is a further generation ahead.

Nortel Data Networking

Avaya has enthusiastically embraced the data portfolio that they acquired from Nortel and is promoting it heavily. Avaya's data networking products are purpose built to address the most critical requirements of real time communications, with independent bench test data proving that they can provide up to seven times more resiliency and twenty times better performance than their key competitor.

Promotions & Financing

Avaya has a number of promotions running that make the economics of upgrading to the latest releases of the heritage Nortel portfolio more appealing. Many of these are continuations of the aggressive bundled pricing promotions that Nortel themselves successfully introduced in recent years.

There are also a number of creative, low cost financing options available.
