Businesses are still in the early stages of maturing their use of business intelligence and performance management, it has been claimed.
According to a benchmark study from Ventana Research, only 15 per cent of business users have reached the highest level of innovative maturity.
Larger companies are performing better than their smaller rivals in this respect, he noted, with more firms advancing business intelligence into performance management in the areas of operations, finance and customer management.
In 41 per cent of firms, a "strong desire" to improve the use of analytics was identified.
"This benchmark research confirms the importance of business intelligence and performance management while showing that maturity is not as advanced as has been thought," said Mark Smith, chief executive of Ventana Research.
"It uncovered a dissatisfaction with existing technologies and the effectiveness of investments to date, but shows that organisations plan improvements in the areas of analytics, search and mobility."
Last week, Lance Mercereau, director of marketing and public relations at Rosslyn Analytics, claimed that poor quality business intelligence affects companies' decision making capabilities.
